May Newsletter: From BBLA President

Joseph Balaz 30 April, 2019

I am very pleased that the first event organized by the new Director of the Czech Center New York, Mr. Mirek Konvalina was well attended and amazingly successful. Mr. Konvalina also had a chance to meet with several of our trustees and colleagues during his initial short visit to New York. He will be back permanently next month. We are all looking forward to a very close and fruitful cooperation with the Czech Center in the coming years.

Our Bohemian Benevolent and Literary Association is extraordinarily proud to partner with the Vaclav Havel Library Foundation in sponsoring the Rehearsal for Truth theater festival's Spring Weekend. It is a showcase of emerging Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and Polish playwrights whose work reflects on current social and political issues. The festival, which honors Vaclav Havel, gives BBLA a chance to support the ongoing creativity arising from the illustrious tradition of Eastern European theater. This allows us to not only pursue our mission of preserving Czech and Slovak heritage in New York City, but to go a step further by contributing to the advancement of the cultural innovations emerging from the fertile ground of that history.

The Rehearsal for Truth spring festival takes place May 9– 12 at the Bohemian National Hall. There is also an exclusive Spring Weekend Soiree for friends of BBLA and The Vaclav Havel Foundation. I hope you will all turn out to support this wonderful celebration of our heritage.

You can buy tickets for the Spring Weekend Soiree here.

I wish you all a happy and healthy May Day.
